Parking Fee Doubles in Perth

Thursday was a shock when I went to pay for my parking. I had to pay double my normal fee. Well, it had a bit to do with the ticket machine taking the money from my credit card and not issuing a ticket. Rather than receive an infringement notice for parking illegally I had to purchase another ticket. That explains the doubling of fee. The next ticket machine provided me with a message "Credit Left" as I purchased the second ticket so maybe, just maybe, the system is smart enough to realise that I'd paid and the money was left over.

I visited the City Of Perth Parking Website to see how I could protest the charge and notify them that there was a faulty machine. They have a service for just this sort of complaint whereby you complete an online form and it emails your complaint. Let's see how long it takes to receive an answer.

One thing I did notice though was that the price for parking would increase by 50% as of July the 1st. Now this isn't something that has been widely publicised (although there was a full page add in today's paper with a few groups not pleased by this decision being made without consultation). I stuck the new fees up on the noticeboard and it got a few people talking in the office. Nobody else knew of this and I find the increase a little difficult to justify, especially in the current economic climate. Not only will the fees increase markedly but earlybird parking will be reduced from prior to 7:30 am to 7:00 am. That will surely catch a few people out and raise more funds for the government's coffers. No word where the extra revenue raised is going to be used either.

Not happy, Jan.

Tree Hugger

I had to pick up a work colleague on the way to a vendor inspection yesterday. He was located near a busy train station. Cars were parked on every available spot alongside the road. So there wasn't a lot of space between cars or trees.

Now, I'm not sure if this guy was a greenie or a different kind of tree hugger but as he pulled out from his off-road parking spot I saw a reasonable sized branch hanging off the back door. He had had to park so close to a tree that when the backseat passenger got out and closed the door they had caught the branch in it. I must say, it was quite a sight to see a car driving down the road with a branch poking out from the door.

Don't Park In Disabled Parking Bays

I hate it when able-bodied people park in disabled parking bays. The other day I was heading to the shopping centre and noticed somebody do this. He parked right out the front of an ATM to withdraw some money. This really angered me and I felt like telling him so. As there was no-one else about I did tell him. I walked past and said, "Slack prick" just loudly enough for him to hear.

Gee, I felt good after doing that. I hate keeping my mouth shut when I see someone doing something wrong. And finally I had done it. After my shopping was done I returned to the same place and his car was gone. Then I noticed that the blue lines outlining the parking bay, a signifier of a disabled parking bay, were actually for "10 mins parking only". The disabled parking bays were further away and completely painted blue.

Whoops. Little bit of foot-in-mouth disease there. I felt like a goose.

When Is Ten Hours Not Ten Hours?

When is 10 hours not 10 hours? I found that out this morning when I paid for 10 hours parking and the machine only provided me with nine hours and 51 minutes. I had quite clearly paid the correct amount but been diddled. It would have been most interesting had a parking inspector nabbed me within that nine minute period as I feel that I'd have a case in court to defend myself. Or do you have a case when you are the litigant and not the defendant?

Maybe I should look a little more closely when I have to pay for parking that I'd not being short changed.

Boxing Day Sales Shopping

The Boxing Day sales have begun in WA, which stands for "Wait Awhile", after having started in the rest of the country the day before. Perhaps we have no right to call them Boxing Day sales as Boxing Day is actually the day previous.

With a forecast 37 degrees and thousands of shoppers looking for bargains it was never going to be too comfortable. I've changed a bit over the years and dipped into my pocket to pay for parking. Astounding isn't it how some people change? Marriage, and the need to maintain it, does that to a man sometimes. We slept in a bit and the sales had been on for two hours before we arrived at the six storey car park. I didn't expect to get a spot and that we would be driving to the top and back down again and have to chuff off looking for another car park. Plenty of spots, to my surprise, on the fourth level.

Man, the shops were busy. And most of the shirts and nice trousers in my size were already gone. Did manage to get a few bargains that were on our shopping list. After three hours Miky was buggered and we had to find somewhere for lunch. Jaws was the place and sushi was on the menu. They make some nice Japanese food there.

Bit of a surprise waiting for us upon our return to the car park. There was a very long queue to pay at the ticket machine. Nowadays you validate and pay for your parking prior to returning to your car and you have about another 10 minutes to leave the building without getting charged any extra. Twenty five minutes I queued up in the sun (with a little bit of shade depending on where I was standing), 37 degrees it was, only to find that of the two payment machines one was broken and the other was playing up. An angry lady, whose money the machine wouldn't accept, was informed that if she had a credit card she could make payment upon exiting instead. That was fine by me and I'd wished that I'd heard that 25 minutes earlier. By this stage the queue must have been well over the 100 people. Who'd have thought that the parking would be easy but leaving the parking would be so difficult?

Miky has, once again, become a coffee addict and we had to stop at McDonalds on the way home for a coffee. That did mean that I missed the cricket on the telly and the Aussies were pounding the Poms again.
