Great Time To Be Sick?

I wouldn't have considered that Christmas was a great time to be sick. I remember many years ago when my mum came down with the mumps on Christmas day and it completely ruined the day for her. Couple that with the fact that we were spending it three hours from home and it just added to the excitement.

As I hadn't had a break from work since the first week of Feb I thought that I might get sick due to relaxing too much and the body falling victim to the exhaustion that it should have experienced sometime during the year. That's happened before. This time around it was a little different.

On Christmas Eve my tummy didn't feel well. In the early hours of Christmas Day there I was talking on the great white telephone. I was calling Ralph although he wasn't answering. I thought that that would be the end of it. If something doesn't agree with the guts then the guts deals with it, right? Not in this case.

Two more days ensued of headaches, tiredness and general tummy upsetedness. Then came the runny poo. From 12:30 until 4:30 in the morning. The end of it? Nah.

Couple more days of nausea, not that I considered pregnancy to be a concern, before everything finished. One of my colleagues said that his father had the same issues and apparently it was going on at school just before they broke for the summer holidays too. Glad to hear that it wasn't just me.

Great. Sick on a Saturday (Christmas Day), Sunday and two public holidays and no sick leave. Hah. Not to worry. Did it ruin Christmas? No. The Boy was only interested in the presents and the missus in the Boxing Day sales. Everybody else got what they wanted. I just happened to have Christmas lunch a few days late. And to think that on Christmas Day I only ate a piece of toast and a cup of soup. No turkey for this turkey.

I'm all better now. Back to my sort of normal.

Eye Drops Don't Taste So Good

For the past week I've had a sore, dry left eye. Not sure if it is conjunctivitis, although the right eye hasn't been affected, but it is annoyingly painful. Probably got more to do with eye strain and staring at a computer screen all day. The lack of blinking, coupled with airconditioning, plays havoc with your eyes.

So I tootled off to a nearby chemist this morning with a package for the last eye drops that I used. The chemist said that the brand had been removed from the market, but then discovered that only the eye cream and not the drops for that brand had been removed from sale, and went on to tell me that they were expensive, of poor strength, difficult to buy and he had many cheaper and more powerful ones to sell. Then he asked me if I wanted to wait a few days for him to get it in. Didn't this guy even see my eye? How ridiculous! I told him, in no uncertain terms, that I required some eye drops right now. Why didn't he try to sell me the better, cheaper and more available product instead of putting down the product that I'd used previously? Not very helpful.

Anyway, I've discovered that eye drops don't taste so good. No, I didn't squirt them into my mouth. They've only gone into my eye, except for the runoff which was wiped up with a paper towel or tissue, but a minute or so later I can taste the drops in the back of my throat. I'm intrigued as to why something put into the eye can actually reach the throat and so quickly. Anybody know why? I understand that the ears, nose and throat are linked but what does it have to do with your eye socket?

Frog In The Throat

With this affliction that I currently have, the aggravated throat, it means that I cough a lot. Maybe my cold or whatever progressed to bronchitis because I can honk like a goose. Anyway, a couple of days ago I was in a meeting and the neck muscles were convulsing slightly. When it came to my turn to talk much of what came out was only a squeak. Sometimes nothing came out. I was asked if I wanted some water but I had that in front of me and had been drinking it.

It was a bit embarrassing and a quite funny. Luckily there weren't too many serious people in the meeting and we could have a laugh about it.

Anybody Want A Dose Of Conjunctivitis?

I am throwing the question out there, "Anybody want a dose of conjunctivitis?" I've got one that I'm willing to give away. For nix. It took hold yesterday and was particularly bad this morning. So bad that I was unable to open my right eye by itself. Visit to the doctor, $60 poorer, bit of medicine and Bob's your uncle. Well, that's the theory. At least the eye isn't sore today. I'll be back at work tomorrow.

Rest Would Be Good When Sick

I don't get sick too often. Work too hard to afford to be sick. On Wednesday I had a sore throat and managed to get through the day. Yesterday I felt even worse and came home just after lunch. Rang the missus to tell her I was going home, in the hope of keeping the house quiet when she came home with the boy after school because I would be asleep but she thought that it would be a great opportunity for me to pick the boy up and her to continue working.

Not only would I get about an hours sleep before picking him up but his friend from school was also coming to our house. So my planned couple of hours sleep had dwindled to 45 minutes by the time I got to bed. Just over 20 minutes into my sleep the phone rang. It was a policeman wanting to investigate the fire that I reported a couple of weeks ago. There wasn't much I could tell him except that we'd had about five fires in the last two weeks in that area. He corrected me with the figure of 15 fires in the last fortnight. On Monday of this week they charged someone with arson so he was hopeful that they had caught the firebug. Back for 20 minutes kip.

At least the boys played well together. I gave them a muesli bar each and made some popcorn for all of us. When the boy's friend's father picked him up we went to check the mail, quite a few Christmas cards rolling in and I haven't sent any yet, before picking up pizzas for tea. Miky had been able to finish her work so that she doesn't need to go to work today so the fact that I was sick worked out well for her. I'm not too bad today so I'll head to work a bit later.
