Reward For Rabbit - Keep It Real, Frank

Saw this posted on a wall nearby my house this morning. Then saw it plastered all over the walls where the guy lives and on his car.

Open message to Frank - my observations:

 - Perhaps your girlfriend is too materialistic - it's only four months old afterall. How can you become that attached to a small pet in that time?

 - Two thousand dollars reward - are you insane? I wouldn't pay any more than $100 for it.

 - Plastering this picture all over your wall at home and on your car with such a ridiculous reward value is only making yourself a target for thieves.

 - Your girlfriend might be a tad overemotional.

Keep it real and don't make yourself a target. Others living in the same area don't need more reason for burglars to come and pay a visit. Do hope you find the rabbit soon and remove your notices. How about I spend $50 ~ $100 to buy something very similar and claim the reward?

Online Games - Rabbid Droppings

Quite topical this game - Rabbid Droppings - with our misbehaving rabbit in mind. The boy scored 17240 points. Beat that.

Just When I Thought I Needed A Dog

A couple of weeks ago I was chasing Stew around the backyard in an attempt to put him in his hutch and away for the night. I was thinking to myself, "I might have to buy a dog to help me round him up. Similar to a sheepdog but more of a rabbitdog." And with that thought he bounded off to the hutch and entered the open door. All by himself. Mind you he gave the hutch a big thump to show his displeasure. I was astounded. We've had him since February and he's just gotten more and more difficult to put away of an evening.

For 11 days he was cared for by some friends whilst we were on holiday. When I saw cared for I leave out reference to his escape and subsequent capture in the middle of the road on his second day there.

He's been back home for two days. When I went to collect him last night he headed straight for the hutch and jumped in. And here was me thinking that this is a dumb animal. He's put one over me for eight months.

Warning - Kids Are Not Safe

I have a warning to all of you parents out there. To leave three kids unattended in the backyard with access to the garden shed is not safe. This is the scene that I returned home to this afternoon after work.

The Trench, as it has become known.

The Trench 2. Looks like a giant footprint.

The Trench 3.

Stew.

Kids are not safe - for your backyard at least. The kids aren't likely to get hurt but your backyard may never recover. And to think that they made this firstly as a trap for the rabbit and then for a trench to keep him in. What great imaginations.

Perhaps they want to go to the Olympics. If so, they're off to a good start because they already dug halfway to China.

The Great Escape - Almost

Had a chat over the fence with the neighbour today. She mentioned that her daughter and her boyfriend had spotted a rabbit in our front yard the other day. Thinking that it belonged to the Boy they tried to catch it. Even the neighbour joined in and nobody could actually catch Stew. They then decided to open the gate and shoo him in. It worked! A closer inspection revealed that he had dug under the only bit of fence that didn't have concrete slabs next to it and pushed the wire netting to one side to make his escape. Our neighbours then placed a couple of bricks in front of the hole so he couldn't make his way out again.

Obviously Stew isn't that stupid as there is some lovely grass out the front. No wonder he heads for the gate when I'm going out. Cunning little bugger. Luckily it wasn't really the great escape.

Foxy Loxy

Got a bit of a shock last night when returning from taekwondo. We'd just about reached home when I spotted, quite clearly, a fox by the roadside. No mistake about it. From a distance it appeared similar to a dingo but it was much smaller. I've seen a wolf in Los Angeles but never a fox in Perth. We parked the car and went to look but it had shot through by then.

Once inside I rang the council who take care of animals and left a message. Andrew, one of the council rangers, phoned back a couple of minutes later and said that they looked after domestic animals only and that I should talk to CALM - Conservation And Land Management. We had a bit of a gasbag and he said that on night shift he quite often spots foxes in our area. Shows how much I drive around at night time, doesn't it?

What I'm most worried about is our pet rabbit who spends all day running around free in the backyard. He's an open invitation for lunch should the fox smell him.

Meal Time - Self Service

When I was growing up and you wanted more food at meal time it was self service. You had to go and get the food yourself. Fair enough. It appears that our rabbit is of the same mindset. The other day he helped himself to a pear. Yesterday he tried to help himself to some chinese cabbage that was being prepared for kim chee. Then he grabbed a stick of celery. He's only interested in the celery leaves and not the stem.

At least he isn't treating us like servants and believes in "help yourself".

Rabbit - How He Became An It

Well, I must say that Stew was pretty aggressive towards me this morning. It's not a good thing when he stays in the laundry and you have to go by at 2:30 to visit the little boy's room and he feels that you are invading his territory. He charged me and I was taken aback by his aggressiveness.

Later on, whilst I was at work, Miky called to say that the rabbit specialist was unhappy that she hadn't brought him in for his operation - to go from a "he" to an "it". She'd booked it a week ago so don't blame me.

The vet said that he was about six months old and that we would have to pay extra to remove his balls as they were huge. Stew came home a very sorry little rabbit, let me give you the tip. No more "balls 'n all" rugby-style tackles for him, no siree. No more viewing the Nutcracker ballet. He doesn't feel like such a man today. A rabbit with a high-pitched squeak is a bit unusual.

We're only $192.50 out of pocket for the experience!!! "Not expensive", the girl at Pet City said about the desexing.

Miky is so cruel. All the girls at work who've owned rabbits told her to desex him. They are all the same. Women are all the same. Cruel with intent. And she had meatballs for tea. See, nothing fazes her. I'd better watch myself.

Revenge Of The Rabbit

Not quite sure if you could classify it as revenge but the rabbit had a go at Miky yesterday. She caught him on the sofa where he peed and poohed. I guess that, as a male, he is just marking out his territory. Still, not on my sofa, fella. She gave him a couple of smacks to get him off the sofa. Then he started chasing her. She tried to shoo him away with her hands and then with a towel. Still he kept coming.

And then the revenge came. He peed on her leg. Worse was to come. Yu-Jin had news at school that day and guess what he told the class about? Yes, of course he revealed the story of the rabbit's revenge on his mother to his classmates. And now I'm telling the world this story. And all three people who read my blog.

His nuts are gonna get chopped soon if this behaviour doesn't stop. Now the pet shop assistant said that desexing a male rabbit wasn't very expensive. Which part of $110 isn't expensive, I'd like to know.

Revenge is sweet. But not necessarily so if you are a rabbit.

Similarities Between A Boy And His Rabbit

I'll compose a short list of similarities I've noticed between the boy and his pet rabbit in the week that Stew has been with us. Miky even called him Stew yesterday and she's determined that his name is Tommy. He he.

- same front teeth
- mouth is always open
- drop things on the floor (one drops food and the other drops poo pellets)
- jumps on the sofa (frowned upon with both parties)
- runs around the house
- eats a little, plays a little, eats a little, plays a little, eats a little...

Update On The Rabbit

Young Stew, or Tommy as other members of the household refer to him, is a funny creature. He'll run around the house and spin 180 degrees much like a little dog would. He pees and poos in the one spot although he does leave a few pellets around the house. Miky bought him a dog bed and filled it with straw for sleeping in but he prefers to crawl under the buffet and sleep there. I guess no-one can bother him there. He's rather affectionate and will come and sit next to you. Yesterday he jumped up on the couch five times. Talk about a wascally wabbit.

Miky was working yesterday from early in the morning and Stew would pop in to see what she was doing quite regularly. That's rather nice but he's not attention seeking like a dog. He will just about follow her around the house. I guess it's got something to do with the fact that she feeds him. He'll even let her kiss him.

The biggest surprise of having Stew as a pet is the missus. As I've mentioned before she's a bit of a clean freak. Now with rabbit poo around the house and hay, pee and poo throughout the laundry you'd think that she couldn't handle it. To my shock it doesn't bother her. And to think that the choice of dog we had was narrowed down to a couple of breeds because they were the only ones that didn't drop hair. Yep, she was worried about dog hair lying about the place. No such qualms about rabbit poo.

Meet The Newest Member Of The Household

It's been a long time coming but we have a new member in our household. His name is Stew. Well, that's what I call him. Miky and Yu-Jin have called him Tommy. Miky's preference was Oliver. I'm sticking with Stew.

Miky bought him today. We actually went looking for a rabbit last weekend but saw a few other animals of interest. At one store we saw a beagle puppy but at $825 that was a bit much. At another store there were Jack Russell pups for $450. Just a bit more than the $100 dad paid for Georgina back in about 1981. A few of the shops near the boy's school were closed when we arrived so Miky went back after school one day. She fell in love with a four month old bunny who was the size of a medium dog.

I didn't feel like paying $120 for a small cage or $200 for a medium cage for the rabbit so we looked in the paper. Found a couple for $50 within half an hour drive. Pity I couldn't fit it in the car with the rest of the family in it. I took a day off work, which I worked today instead, so that we could spend the whole day shopping. The new Ikea store has opened in Osborne Park and it's massive. Arrived at lunch time and had to queue for about 15 minutes to get lunch. Whilst in line a magician came to entertain us and then gave the boy a $5 gift voucher. Bonus. Ikea was so busy that you couldn't think and we didn't end up buying anything although we had heaps on our shopping list. Disappointing that. It's about four times the size of the old store.

Spent much of the morning and some of the afternoon hunting for tiles to redo the bathroom. Picked up pretty much what we wanted too. Not a bad days shopping.

This morning Miky bought another bunny. This time it was a tawny coloured dwarf lop, I think. I drove up to the guy's house with the rabbit hutch for sale and we only just managed to fit it into my car. Funny, I've put a whole Ikea kitchen into my car before.

Once home my missus informed me that the mozzies were bothering Stew and I would have to cover the hutch with mosquito wire. Duly went to Bunnings to purchase said article and then spent another hour installing it. Came up ok.

It seems that Stew is quite comfortable inside our house. He has a pee and a poo in the same place and likes wandering around the house. Stew is especially fond of hiding behind the buffet.
