The Western Australian Taekwondo Council State Taekwondo Championship was held for 2010 a week and a half ago on the weekend. I took a lot of videos and a few photos. Have a look at my compilation of fights. Spent most of the day there and saw some decent action. The one fight I didn't decide to video, as the two girls involved know each other so well and I thought there'd be no action, turned out to be one of the highlights with one girl getting her nose smashed. And I was up close to the action too.

When Will We See A Real Danny Green Fight?

Danny Green is quite a popular figure in Perth. He gets his face on the news quite often, Channel 7 promotes him with some vigour, and he boxes for the people of Perth. That's the offical storyline anyway.

After an enormously popular fight with Anthony Mundine some years ago Green has struggled to find top level boxers to fight. Or has he? Perhaps if you have a world title you're not willing to put it on the line against someone who could actually beat you and rob you of the gravy train that you find yourself on. Green is 37 years old and he doesn't fight many boxers who are in their early 20s. None, actually.

It was, and it wasn't, a huge surprise to see his latest opponent, Paul Briggs, who retired from boxing three years ago, to go down in the first round. The fight was over after only 29 seconds which included the 10 second count which took about 13 seconds to conduct. Some people are even going so far as to say it was a dive. Apparently it is going to be investigated by a retired judge. When you have odds of $10 for a first round knockout drop to $1.50 in the hours before the fight what does that tell you? Not too many satisfied onlookers who handed over plenty of dough to attend the "fight". Drink bottles were thrown at Briggs as he left the ring. Only three punches were thrown and the one that brought him down was a glancing blow to the head. After being struck he staggered and appeared to be thinking, "Would now be a good time to go down?" before deciding that indeed it would be. A $200,000 - $250,000 purse for him as the loser was incentive enough it would seem to be involved in this farce.

I don't think that we'll see Danny Green involved in a real fight again. This is a sad note in the twilight of his career.

I think that if you want to see real fighting just switch to YouTube and look for girls fighting in the playground. You'll see more real punches and more onlookers satisfied with the outcome.

Western Australia Taekwondo Invitational Championship 2010 - Another Video

Another video from the Western Australia Taekwondo Invitational Championship 2010 held at Hartfield Park Recreation Centre today. This one stars Patrick from our Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan club in his championship fight against Jay [insert club name here]. The match was heading for a great finish but was brought, unfortunately, to a premature end by injury. This is my second effort with Windows Movie Maker (TM).

Western Australia Taekwondo Invitational Championship 2010

The Western Australia Taekwondo Invitational Championship 2010 was held at Hartfield Park Recreation Centre today. I made three videos of Jason from our Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan club in his championship fight and put them together with Windows Movie Maker (TM). This is my first effort with this program and I think that the result isn't too bad. Jason came back from five points down to record a stunning win. And there was little to argue about regarding the scoring as it was done with an electronic hogu (chest protector). Only kicks to the head are scored by the judges. Check it out.

Ants versus Crickets

Another video in the series of Ants vs .....

Looks like there is going to be more than one or two deaths from the pet ants with the introduction of three crickets into the ecosphere. And to think that I was worried about being bitten by a grasshopper. These crickets can be lethal. They might also be a bit amorous when it comes to ants. Check out the close-up.

Feeding The Pet Ants

I must have a sadistic streak. Either that or a very kind heart towards ants. As you may know we bought The Boy an ant ecosphere for Christmas. One of my biggest worries is providing them with enough food to eat and we have about twice as many ants as was suggested. So I try to give them quite a varied diet. And we have plenty of creepy crawlies about to make it interesting. Firstly they had a spider and then a big blowfly.

I fed them a live moth recently. It didn't take them too long to subdue and then devour.

Next on the menu was a dragonfly. The Boy had caught a juvenile dragonfly earlier and they ate that pretty quickly. I grabbed an adult dragonfly and put him in with the ants. Talk about energy! He killed at least a dozen ants before he was subdued and eaten. In the morning he was nothing more than an outer shell. The ants carried their dead comrades away too.

Last night I came across a cockroach. A big, black, ugly bastard. Not that I find the big, brown, ugly bastards pleasant to look at. This one just happened to be black. He was easy to catch and spent the night in a jar next to the ant ecosphere. Probably had no idea what was in store for him. It didn't take too long for the ants to notice that the feeding jar had been changed and so a few of them entered. Before you knew it there were six to eight of them attacking the cockroach. He kept flicking his legs to shake them off. I was surprised that the antennae weren't targeted. Some 20 minutes later most of the colony were on the attack. It was beautiful. Better not look at the pictures if you're a bit squeamish.

The Pot Calling The Kettle Black

The season proper hasn't started yet and already we've seen some biffo in Aussie Rules football. The funny part is that it was two teammates that hit the headlines. The really funny part is that they were from the Carlton Football Club. The hilarious part is that David Rhys-Jones said the guy dealing out the biffo, Setanta O'hAilpin, was a disgrace. Coming from a man who visited the tribunal on charge a record number of time, 25, and who received a suspension of two years at the age of 41 after assaulting an opponent and leaving him with multiple fractures, that's a bit rich.

I dunno what lead to the biffo and then the kick in the bum but it was only Cameron Cloke, himself a disgraced footballer delisted from Collingwood after speeding at 144 km/h in a 100 zone whilst his club was receiving sponsorship from the Transport Accident Commission and subsequently costing them a $10,000 fine, and he probably deserved it.

And it is only Carlton.
